Modern Rust is a design + build furniture company created with the belief that with a little patience and creativity, an unwanted piece of lumber can be reborn as something worthwhile and wonderful. Most of our pieces are made using materials that have been reclaimed, recycled, re-purposed or reused. Our pieces are designed with simplicity of assembly and transfer in mind, and since handcrafted, eco-friendly furniture remains at an unattainable price point for many, Modern Rust has been modeled to bridge the gap by offering an affordable green furniture line. Both modern and rustic, Modern Rust is Farmhouse, re-defined.
Lead Times: Order to completion timeline is approximately 5-8 weeks depending on the piece, and the size of the order. Please note building of your Modern Rust pieces may take longer given that the entire process is done by hand and the pieces are made from materials that are not readily available.
Payment: We accept checks (local orders) and all major credit cards. Our pieces are made to order and payment is requested at the time of order. We accept a 50% deposit on large orders, with the remaining balance being due upon the delivery being scheduled.
Furniture size: The customer is responsible for knowing that all elevators, stairwells, corridors and doorways of his/her house or apartment will permit normal delivery. Please note that we are not responsible for furniture that does not fit and will give no refunds if this occurs.
Materials: Modern Rust pieces are handcrafted from waste, salvaged, rescued or surplus construction lumber (Douglas Fir and Pine.) On occasion we may add new lumber to meet the deadlines promised to our clients. We use water based stains and every piece is sealed with water based polyurethane.
Delivery and Installation: Local delivery is $99 (Washington DC Metro delivery). Our pieces can be delivered nationwide. The delivery price varies depending your location and the item(s) you are interested in. Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with the pieces you are interested and your zip code for a quote. Please note that the carriers we use are not part of Modern Rust. We will contact you prior to your pieces being scheduled for pick up, but the delivery details (ETA) will be provided by the carrier and not Modern Rust
We work with recycled lumber, which needs to be conditioned for furniture use. Each piece of lumber is unique and has its own set of characteristics. Our furniture is crafted by hand, so some variations in size and finish are to be expected. To reduce waste, we always try to build with what we have at hand, so there may be variations from one piece to the next. Each piece is well thought out to produce the least amount of waste as possible and all waste pieces are kept and used in other products and pieces. Please note that knots, cracks, chips, markings, small gaps between planks and imperfections within the piece are part of the charm of purchasing furniture made with recycled materials and are to be expected. By their nature, the kind of lumber we use may be somewhat uneven, and may bow slightly over time. The planks will adjust themselves to their new environment (your home's temperature, dryness vs. humidity, etc.) accordingly. The adjustment to the new environment may sometimes mean a small change in dimensions which may present itself as a gap between the planks or small cracks. Stain touch up kits are available upon request. Our furniture is guaranteed for life, shipping is paid by the client. No parts of this website or its contents, products or designs may be reproduced, distributed, copied or publicly displaced without permission.
Bahram Sadighian is the founder as well as the head product designer of Modern Rust. He has a BS in Environmental Design from the University of Oklahoma and has been designing furniture for over 25 years. After experimenting with many different technique and materials, in 2004 he started designing and building exclusively using reclaimed/waste construction lumber. This type of lumber is a difficult material to work with, but in his view these were usable pieces that were being too easily discarded. Modern Rust started with a simple bench and soon other pieces were to follow. In addition to creating Modern Rust, Bahram is the founder of Living/Storage/Quarters and holds 2 pending patents for electric propulsion systems.
Shadi Bahar After working years as a graphic designer and fine artist, Shadi joined Modern Rust to manage marketing and sales.
